Two Port Authority policemen - John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Pena) - are trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001, after they go in to help people escape. The film also logs the stories of their families and the people that rescue them from the rubble, showing that tragedy will draw people together.
