Margot (Nicole Kidman) , a successful yet neurotic and uptight writer, goes with her 11 year-old son to visit her free-spirited sister Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who is on the verge of marrying her boyfriend Malcolm (Jack Black). Margot, of course, disapproves of he sister's choice of husband, and the relationship between the disparate pair threatens to strain beyond breaking point.
