Vicky and Cristina, two young Americans spending the summer in Barcelona, are both immediately attracted to the impulsive, handsome and talented artist Juan Antonio at an art opening. But whereas the Vicky, who is engaged to be married to her unromantic but reliable boyfriend, is approaches him with pragmatic distance, the nonconformist Cristina throws caution to the wind and embarks on a passionate affair with both Juan Antonio and his unhinged ex-wife María Elena.
