Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) is a strict disciplinarian who rules the hallways of a catholic school in 1960s The Bronx. When the liberal and charismatic Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) joins the staff, the two instantly clash over their diametrically opposing idealogies. Sister Aloysius sees an opportunity to rid herself of her opponent when the young and naive Sister James (Amy Adams) reports to her superior a vague suspicion that Father Flynn is paying perhaps a little too much personal attention to the school's first black student. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius sets into motion a chain of events that will have massive consequences for all involved.
