A terrible accident has left the faraway kingdom of Dor bereft of its happiness, the sunlight has disappeared and the world has become a dreary gray. But Despereaux Tilling, a brave and virtuous mouse, refuses to accept the despondency his world has sunk into. He teams up with a similarly outcast rat, Roscuro, in the hope of being celebrated in the tales of chivalry he so adores.
