In the XVIIth century, the second count of Rochester ( Johnny Depp ) is a close friend and confident of the British king Charles II ( John Malkovich ). He's dedicating his life to the search for pleasure and truth and isboth criticized and admired for his courage. As the count meets Elizabeth Barry ( Samantha Morton ), a young actress, he immediately falls in love with her and everything becomes much more complicated.
