A young girl is kidnapped from her family and sold to a high class brothel. She is trained by the Madam to sing, dance and charm the men that visit her. Eventually she falls in love, however the object of her desire cannot marry her as it would bring shame upon his family. Soon and invasion by the British army forces her to flee the brothel and she ends up in her old home village. Will things end happily for the tortured soul of Umrao Jaan or will she only ever have herself?
