Mike O'Donnell is a thirty five year-old failure. Divorced from his wife and estranged from his two children, he is reduced to sleeping on his friend's couch as he rues the mistakes he's made in life. Suddenly a chance encounter with a mysterious janitor transforms him into his seventeen year-old self! With a renewed sense of purpose, he siezes the chance to start over. After he enrolls back in school, he befriends his bullied son and tries to break up his daughter from her sleazy boyfriend, and the tree begin to reconnect. He also visits his wife, and remembers all the things he loved about her. With his life finally going right, he has to find a way to transform back into his grown-up self to reap the benefits...
