Following a series of homicides on a deserted Santa Fe road, two FBI agents, Elizabeth Anderson (Julia Ormond) and Sam Hallaway (Bill Pullman), arrive at a local police station to investigate. As they interrogate the three eye-witnesses - a dodgy police officer, a strung-out junkie and an eight-year-old girl whose family were murdered - it becomes apparent from their wildly contrasting stories that all is not what it seems.
