Thompson started this diary in 1959, which spoke of the life of a fictional Paul Kemp, who worked as a freelance journalist with no prospects, other than his article submissions to a scabby newspaper. Apparently not alone, he spent his time in the company of other lost souls, whose self-neglect made it difficult to see any other option. However, Kemp knew that he needed something to escape this cycle, yet couldn't find what.
